Is Smoking Worse Than Smokeless Tobacco?
Another common misconception is that smoking cigarettes will help you stop smoking, according to the American Cancer Society. But there is no evidence to prove that is true. While it is true that smokeless tobacco poses a somewhat lower health risk than a cigarette, it is still nowhere near as safe.
According to Li, It is obvious that whatever effects smokeless tobacco may have on the risk of developing cancer, if they exist at all, are very, very much smaller in magnitude than those known to occur with smoking. If smokable tobacco were introduced into a population similar to the non-smokers, the largest meta-analysis suggests any increased risk would be negligible in comparison with lives saved from decreased smoking.
A new UCLA-led study also found that smokers who had previously been cigarette smokers using smokeless tobacco had lower levels of both inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers, as well as biomarkers for tobacco exposure, compared with current exclusively cigarette smokers, despite having higher nicotine levels. Less is known about the link between cardiovascular disease risk and smokeless tobacco, Rezk-Hanna said, but these findings suggest that smoking tobacco is unlikely to cause increases in the levels of cardiovascular-related biomarkers seen in smokers. Studies have shown nicotine stays in the bloodstream longer in people using smokeless tobacco compared with those smoking.
Smokeless tobacco products may also contain higher levels of nicotine than cigarettes, which may contribute to dependence. Chewing tobacco contains more nicotine than cigarettes, which may make quitting harder than smoking. Plus, chewing tobacco, or snus, may be even more addictive than smoking cigarettes.
Many chain-smokers also harbor a false belief that chewing tobacco results in lower intakes of nicotine. While there is less risk for heart-related conditions than smoking, there are still a number of negative health effects associated with chewing tobacco. Both smoking and chewing tobacco can do considerable harm on health.
Regular chewing tobacco can also put an individual at risk for a horrific form of mouth cancer, not to mention developing mouth lesions, black, hairy tongue, and bad breath. Similar to smoking tobacco (think cigarettes, cigars, waterpipes, pipe), smoking non-smoking tobacco (think dip, chew, snuff) causes a disease in your mouth and gums, causing bad breath, and can make teeth fall out. There is not one type of tobacco that is safe, so you are encouraged to avoid all tobacco products for health protection. Some smokeless tobacco products may expose people to lower levels of harmful chemicals than tobacco smoke, but this does not mean these products are safe alternatives to smoking.
Many say smokeless tobacco products are less harmful than smoking, and they may help people quit. Alternative tobacco products contain harmful chemicals and toxins, which pose health risks. Many people may turn to electronic cigarettes as a way to try and quit smoking, and evidence suggests that they can be effective in helping people quit. In one study, in which South Asian-origin individuals participated, about 80% of respondents were not confident about the true harmful effects of using wood pipe as well as chewing tobacco.
